Position Description

Be Part of Something Bold and join one of the founding schools at the University of Calgary, and one of largest Schools of Social Work in Canada! In the last half century, the Faculty of Social Work has become one of Canada’s largest, most diverse and innovative social work schools. 

The Faculty of Social Work invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank or appointment with tenure at the Associate Professor rank in our Southern Alberta Region located on the campus of the University of Lethbridge. The Southern Alberta Region is located within the traditional lands of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) nations.

We are research intensive, building on the foundation created by current researchers who have a demonstrated record of developing and applying new social work knowledge.  Our work supports inter-professional and community-based enquiry from multiple perspectives in the generation and application of knowledge to social and individual change. Our goal is to be a national leader in knowledge creation and mobilization of this knowledge to solve some of society’s most pressing social issues.

The Southern Alberta Region, established in 1982, offers the BSW and Clinical Practice MSW degrees, with eight faculty members educating approximately 25 MSW students and approximately 60 BSW students.

The successful candidate will have a clear program of research and relevant social work practice experience with a focus on one or more of the areas in: Indigenous social work practice; Indigenous epistemology and research methods; Indigenous social work education; anti-oppressive and post-colonial theory.

Candidates applying for Assistant Professor rank must hold, or be nearing completion of, a Ph.D. in Social Work or related discipline in Indigenous pedagogies and practices; Masters in social work is required; as well as a publication record in high quality peer reviewed journals; and a demonstrated ability to attract external research funding; evidence of excellence in teaching, at a university level, using a variety of delivery methods with an interdisciplinary approach to undergraduate and graduate levels. A minimum of two years full-time post MSW practice experience is strongly preferred.

Candidates applying for Associate Professor rank will possess a PhD in Social Work or related discipline in Indigneous pedagogies and practices with at least one graduate degree in Social Work. Masters in social work is required. Candidates should have strong leadership experience; an excellent record of scholarly research and publications in high quality peer reviewed journals; a strong track record of securing external research funding; evidence of excellence in teaching at a university level, using a variety of delivery methods with an interdisciplinary approach to undergraduate and graduate levels. A mimum of two years full-time post MSW practice experience is strongly preferred.  

Supervision of graduate students and contributing to the ongoing development of the curriculum is required for both ranks.  The ability to speak a First Nations language will be considered an asset.

As a member of the Southern Alberta Region, candidates should also have strong professional networks and the ability to initiate community partnered research project. This partnership will include members of the University of Lethbridge and Southern Alberta community partners. In addition, candidates with an interest in academic leadership are encouraged to apply.

Lethbridge is an increasingly diverse city of over 90,000, in close proximity of two large First Nations Reservations. It offers excellent educational and cultural facilities and a wonderful environment for families. Lethbridge is one of the sunniest cities in Canada and offers a mild climate. Within a two hour drive of Lethbridge are the Rocky Mountains and world class recreational activities such as fishing, hiking and skiing.
